Understanding Addiction as Self- Medication
Dr. Mark Albanese is an Assistant Professor and Director of Addictions Treatment Serivces at Cambridge Health Alliance. He specializes in Psychiatry & Neurology and Addiction Psychiatry. When does behavior become addictive? How do I know my son or daughter has some kind of addiction? What are the warning signs? These and other important questions are answered on today’s program. Addiction is a complex process that is influenced by many variables. Brain biology influences the course of addictions. Recently, advances in neurobiology and genetics have helped us get beyond conceptualizing addicted people as morally weak or defective. Addictions are varied such as alcohol, substance abuse, sexual, food or gambling. Addictions can be considered as self-regulation disorders in which addictive behavior is an attempt to correct or deal with difficulty in regulating emotions, self-esteem, relationships, and self-care.

Entering the Land of Dreams
Angela Russell is the author of the original story of the Land of Smaerd (dreams spelled backwards), which she wrote when she was 10 years old. Recently, the book was rewritten in verse by her sister, Andrea von Botefuhr. Born in Hollywood, California, Angela grew up primarily in the Hawaiian Islands where she began developing skills in writing, art, music and filmmaking.  At age 18, she taught guitar, Polynesian dance and Yoga.Dr. Roxanne incorporates the sacred art of drawing mandalas for insight, healing and self expression in her discussion with Angela. In addition to delighting the senses, it introduces children to a basic understanding of • the "unified field" of all possibilities, • quantum mechanics as a recreational activity (eliminating boredom), • leveraging and directing emotion (energy-in-motion), and • the fun and freedom of dreaming beyond limitations.

Fostering Creativity through Meditation, Dreams, and the Natural World
Bryn Barnard, illustrator of Land of Smaerd (dreams spelled backwards), collaborated with authors Angela Russell and Andrea von Botefuhr. In his collaboration some images are direct visual translations of Angela and Andrea’s idea, some entirely his own, some hybrid. Bryn has found a way to revive the ancient technique of glazing to achieve the saturation and luminosity such as the dazzling, technicolor effects of Maxfield Parrish. His undergraduate work was at UC Berkeley, and he trained as an illustrator at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He has been a guest art teacher in many schools from kindergarten to high school. He painted murals for Seattle Children’s Hospital, renowned for both its extraordinary care and its artwork. With a background in cultural anthropology and art, Bryn Barnard brings a rich depth of cross-cultural values, symbols, traditions and rites of passage to his artistic self-expression. In this interview, Bryn speaks about his five years living in Southeast Asia and the attitudes he adopted for his own. He discussed the technique of dreamwork in the Senoi tribe of Malaysia. Children can learn how to face their fears and turn falling into flying, symbolically. In his daily work/practice at the conceptual stage of illustrating, Bryn likes to work in complete silence. Then he plays music to sustain his focus during the long hours it takes to complete one of these images, typically 30-40 hours. To maintain mind / body balance, he likes to run every day. As he explains, "this is my church, the place I work out my ideas unconsciously. I'm usually in an alpha meditation stage for most of the hour. Problems which I'm wrestling with on a conscious level are often resolved during these periods of suggestible activity surrounded by woods and sounds of the natural world".
